71Miles is a place to find tips and information about destinations close to major cities. Their reasoning is that most people that take weekend trips don’t travel far from home so, they provide reviews, videos, and even event calendars to make your getaway more enjoyable. Right now, only information on Northern California is available but they plan to offer a complete national network in the months ahead. I hope they add Seattle soon ‘cuz I still have no idea what goes on around here!

Group Recipes gives you a place to find new recipes but in sort of a different way. You can take a taste test and see if their recipe robot can predict if you’ll like a certain dish, find recipes based on photos that look good enough to eat, and even post your own cooking show. There’s a touch of social networking but the food is still the mail focus.

Ning is a platform for building you own social network. You can completely customize the features, profile questions, and the theme. Your network members get their own profile page which they can customize.
Note: The Ning network I created for this screencast is called Screeniacs. It’s set to private right now and looks awful but when I get some free time, maybe tonight, I’ll make it pretty and allow people to join up!

Tumblr is a free service for making tumblelogs. According to Wikipedia, “a tumblelog is a variation of a blog that favors short-form, mixed-media posts over the longer editorial posts frequently associated with blogging”. It’s actually a great way to quickly blog about something or to throw up a cool YouTube video. Cheers to a service that I actually may use!
