Techgirls

It is very interesting to me how much attention women get when they “get” tech. As an example I will use Natali Del Conte, a new writer at Techcrunch. I read techcrunch all the time, but it has become a bit catty. I usually read all the comments because it’s good to get more than one opinion on the topic at hand. Some of the comments lately have had nothing to do with the news story at all. There is some criticism, but nothing to back it up. Not surprising there is the occasional, “your hot!” even though you look like an idiot when you post something like that on a tech site and an even bigger idiot when you add a link to your website. Are her feelings hurt? Doubtful. I know mine would be except I’m way more of a newbie than she is so I could probably benefit from some criticism. There is also the niceness that goes along with being a techgirl. Sometimes I think people are kinder to me because I’m a girl and maybe they’re afraid I”ll burst into tears if they give me any kind of negative feedback. Little do they know I would probably burst into flames and let them have it. ;) I almost feel that if Marshall Kirkpatrick had been replaced by a man, things would have just gone on like always. There would be comments made on the story at hand and not, “Natali’s kind of new to TechCrunch and I think maybe still a little new to writing professionally”. Passive aggressive, yuck.
I’m sure Natali knew exactly what she was getting into when deciding to write for techcrunch. It’s not uncommon for the readers to freak out if they don’t like a review or a particular news story. This is a different kind of freak out and I think it is rather amusing. I wonder if I would gain any readers if I posted a photo?
