AboutUs.org
AboutUs is a “free directory about every domain in the world that anyone can edit”. Great. That sounds fantastic. I went to check out aboutus after reading about it on techcrunch. I was curious to see what would come up about screeniac.
There is a description that is excerpted from my website. This is fine. It’s exactly what is on my about page. Hence the name aboutus. But let’s see…what if some punk ass decides that my description should read, “Screeniac provides screencasts of lame things we find on the web. We think all the sites reviewed here suck ass”. Do I have to keep checking up on aboutus to make sure no one is putting false information up about my website? I don’t think I should have to.
Something Marshall Kirkpatrick from techcrunch mentioned was that he was a little uncomfortable with “having 3 million pages about websites, populated automatically and by any random editor who stops by, titled “about us”. The phrase implies an autobiographical text”. It does imply that, and I did not, nor did anyone else who works for VPOP, place any of that information on aboutus.
I can see the idea behind aboutus, and it’s nice that people can vote or add a review, but they can comment and email me all they want from my website. Why do I need aboutus to do it for me and possibly allow false information posted? I don’t. If they decide to provide some way of notifying the site owners of new changes made to their aboutus page, then maybe I will be a bit more accepting of aboutus. I don’t hate it, I just don’t like it.

Hi Molly,
I think that if you watch a page in the wiki you can check an option that sends you an email every time it gets changed. For screeniac.com the link to add it to your watch list is: http://www.aboutus.org/index.php?title=Screeniac.com&action=watch

Hi Brandon,
Thanks for the tip. It still kind of bothers me that I had to sign up to add screeniac to my watchlist, but no one had to sign up to add screeniac to aboutus. Anyway, I’ve signed up and added screeniac to my watchlist and all is well. Thanks again.
